To
assist in meeting the common regeneration objectives of both Athy,
County Kildare, Ireland and Rhyl, Denbighshire, Wales, the
two towns have joined in partnership to share ideas and experience.
With support from the EU's Interreg IIIA programme, initiatives have been put in place to support communities with the development of enterprise, training and forming effective local and cross border networks.
INTERREG
is a fund provided by the European Union in order for countries which share
borders to develop sustainable initiatives. This is the third time that the
EU have issued funding for projects using this fund.
There are many examples of how INTERREG funding has assisted communities in the border counties of Ireland; INTERREG funding has also been successfully employed in Scandinavian countries and in Central Europe.
Regenerating Athy and Rhyl (RAR) has accessed funding under Priority 1 of the programme. The main aim of the project is to encourage the regeneration of business and enterprise in the two towns.
It will also focus on identified problems which exist and engage the economically inactive, create an innovative business environment and promote effective cooperation among enterprises in the two towns.
